The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that one in every five Canadians experiences a mental health problem within a given year. While we often know a lot about physical illness, there tends to be less knowledge about mental health or substance use problems. This lack of understanding leads to fear and negative attitudes towards individuals living with these problems. It prevents people from seeking help for themselves and from providing appropriate support to people around them. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. This virtual course consists of 1 self directed online module and 2 facilitator led sessions.

Cost: $175

MHFA – Supporting Youth Virtual is an entry level workshop designed for those who have frequent contact with young people ages 12 to 24. It is designed to help recognize when a youth is developing a mental health problem. However, the course also provides some useful information on how to assist a young person who has a history of a mental illness or longer-term mental health and/or substance use problems, as well as how to support a young person in crisis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognizing signs that a young person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health or substance use crisis
  • Initiating conversations that encourage a young person to talk about a mental health or substance use problem
  • Discussing professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
  • Assisting in a mental health or substance use crisis situation
  • Checking in with one’s own mental well-being and take action as needed
